Catalan rumba is in mourning. Joan Ximénez Valentí, known as El Petitet, died this October, aged 62. Born in El Raval, he was a reference for this unique musical style in the world. El Petitet brought the Rumba to the Liceu and a tribute was being prepared for him next October 21 at Paral·lel 62, with the intention of repeating a great format. The collaboration of more than 15 great musicians and friends was planned, who had to go on stage with him to celebrate the rumba and to collect funds for the expenses related to the myasthenia gravis that this great artist unfortunately suffered from.
El Petitet, quite an icon of Raval’s rumba scene, had played with Gato Pérez and Peret, among many others and was the son of Ramón el Huesos, legendary palmero in King Peret’s band. El Petitet had a very long career, and in 2017 he brought together a band of 27 rumba and classical musicians, to which was added the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, in a spectacular performance. A documentary was even dedicated to him that explains how this great event was possible.
